Spot the Signs of Child Exploitation

There are a number of signs to look out for if you suspect a young person is being sexually and/or criminally exploited, including:

  • Staying out all night or being regularly missing from home or school.

  • Changes in behaviour or behaving aggressively to other members of the public.
  • Unexplained gifts or new possessions or carrying/using large quantities of cash.
  • Having a significantly older boyfriend/girlfriend, or being accompanied by groups of older individuals.
  • Becoming increasingly secretive.
  • A sudden change in friendship groups.
  • Changes in physical appearance.
  • Spending excessive amounts of time online or on their mobile phone, receiving frequent messages and calls, or being in possession of more than one phone.
  • Someone shouting or displaying violence or aggression towards a young person or instructing and appearing to control them.
  • Sudden involvement in crime or sudden increase in criminal offending.
  • Sexual health problems.

If you suspect a child is at risk of exploitation, always report it.
