Know your rights

As a child or young person, you have rights. In England and Wales, the Children Act says professionals must keep you safe. This includes social care services, the police, teachers and health workers. Adults and organisations that work with children and young people should promote these rights.

Your rights include:

  • saying what you think and feel, and being listened to
  • relaxing and playing
  • getting an education
  • having health and health services
  • having a good enough standard of living, including somewhere to live, food and clothes
  • not being discriminated against
  • being protected from abuse, violence, bullying and harm
  • having your cultural background and identity valued
  • having your best interests put first when decisions are made about you
