The role of the designated safeguarding lead and Rotherham processes: March 2026

‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’, is statutory guidance for schools and colleges.

It states that schools and colleges should appoint a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) who should ‘take lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection. This should be explicit in the role holder’s job description and the school / college should ensure that the DSL has the appropriate status and authority to carry out the duties of the post. The role carries a significant level of responsibility, and the DSL should be given additional time, funding, training, resources, and support to carry out the role effectively’. There is also the requirement to have trained Deputy DSL who can deputise in the absence of the DSL.
